PIKEVILLE, Ky. – A lady with extensive experience both playing and coaching volleyball at the collegiate level is the new coach at the University of Pikeville.
Shannon Smith Gassman has been named the fourth coach of volleyball at Pikeville.
Gassman spent two seasons playing volleyball at the University of Iowa and two more seasons at the University of Tulsa, both of which play at the NCAA Div. I level.
While at Tulsa, she had the fourth best total of assists in a career despite playing only two seasons there, and had the fourth-best single season in school history. She also had the top two totals of assists in a match in Golden Hurricane history.
After her playing career she had two seasons as a graduate assistant at Olivet Nazarene, where the team won two NCCAA national championships. They qualified for the NAIA tournament in 2001-02 and claimed two regular-season conference titles.
After one season as assistant coach at Grinnell College, she was the coach at Manteno High School for one season.
She was the assistant coach at Waldorf (Iowa) College in 2007 and 2008. In those two seasons, the Warriors had a combined record of 41-18 and won the 2007 conference tournament title.

Chad Gassman, the head baseball coach at Pikeville.
